It is no secret to those who know me well that I have fallen in love with the Netflix series Virgin River. I quickly became enmeshed in the town’s characters, drama, and future. The show opens with the premise of a nurse trying to find her way after some rough experiences in Southern California. She takes a job in Virgin River, just outside of Eureka, California.
As the show progressed, the script references other Northern California towns like Garberville and even Sacramento. The problem is that none of the natural scenery looks anything like Eureka! There are no Redwood trees. The mountains are shorter and steeper, reminiscent of the Cascades further north. The ocean is nonexistent in the show. These environs are nothing like those I’ve grown to know and love in Humboldt County.

Simply put, this ain’t California. Hollywood has moved north. But where, exactly?
The town of Virgin River centers around Jack’s Bar. The bar is owned by Jack, one of the main characters in the show. It’s the place that everybody gathers to have a drink, eat a meal and share in the day’s drama and adventures.

It comes as no surprise that Virgin River sits inside southwestern British Columbia. Parts of Virgin River come from Vancouver and the surrounding suburbs. Jack’s Bar is actually the Watershed Grill just outside of Squamish on the Sea to Sky Highway. On the way back into town we took a pit stop here to take a few photos, but alas could not stay as there wasn’t available parking.

If you do go, go at an off time so that there’s a spot to park and to enjoy the bar, but the scenery and locale. Squamish is a fantastic place to visit!
