I just need to say it: I’m so far behind on my blog. I was supposed bright about the Super in August and now here it is in September. Plus, I don’t think I’ve finished quite writing about Canada. Forgive me for authoring out of order.
Tonight’s Moto Social at Excelsior Coffee was in a part of the city I don’t really know. Once I get south of SOMA, my local knowledge of San Francisco drops off fairly quickly. One of the things I appreciate about The Moto Social is getting to go explore a new part of the city each month and getting the photograph a new part of the city with a plethora of motorcycles all over the sidewalks. Parking is usually thin at these events so it’s sometimes a challenge to Park, but it’s a photographer’s playground to go explore the streets and sidewalks to see the people and motorcycles that convened together for the evening.
I’ve recently fallen in love with dirt bikes that have street tires. I enjoy the irony in the Supermoto world and it’s also fun to have a light bike with lots of power that’s extraordinarily nimble. Tonight I just had the iPhone as I didn’t want to lug the SLR camera. I’ve not done a ton of street photography outside of The Moto Social and it became quickly apparent how much I enjoyed photographing different people’s motorcycles next to the graffiti in the area. Whether it was the bright colors on the motorcycles or somebody’s gold rims, the graffiti would often accentuate something in the motorcycle and therefore the bike with then accentuate the graffiti. Definitely an unexpected find, but one that I immensely enjoyed.
I also quickly picked up on the late-model Harley-Davidson. Growing up I was fascinated with these bikes and would often order the catalog to see what was coming out from the company each year – even though my 15-year-old sel could never of afforded a Harley-Davidson. Tonight’s model appeared to be late 80s or early 90s in fantastic condition. One of the other things I really do appreciate about The Moto Social is that you can find some truly unique bikes that show up in the community.
Alas, summer is coming to a close quickly. Next month is obviously September, and it is the closing evening for The Moto Social, signaling a change in the Bay Area’s motorcycling season. Short days, wet weather, and cold ocean winds are right around the corner.
Catch you next month!
