July’s Rivian Romp: Touring Donner Lake

I’m in a phase where I’m trying to make contributions to my blog easier. I often try to get all of the photos and everything just right, and then it sits on my hard drive for at least a month before I have time to call, curate, and publish. I want to get out of that habit and post less content more frequently.

The Bay Area has been experiencing a massive heat wave for nearly a week. I grew up in the southeast, so I’m used to hot summers, but this is a whole different level of heat oppression. Temperatures have been near 110°, if not above, in my part of the world. When traveling out to the Central Valley, my truck registered 120°. At that point, I was done. I needed to get up in elevation to start cooling off.

Today‘s Rivian Romp is up at Donner Lake. Fortunately, it’s only 99° here at Donner Lake (generally unheard of). Donner Lake, in many ways, is Lake Tahoe‘s kid brother named for the infamous, cannibalous Donner party who traveled through this area a little too late in the season back in the 1800s.

The highway named for the infamous Donner party snakes through this area and offers some incredible early morning or weekday motorcycling before it becomes overwhelmed with tourists who don’t know how to drive well in the mountains 😜. Donner Pass Highway is also co-signed with old US 40, much of which has been replaced by the more modern Interstate 80.

The more miles I drive, the more I learn how to use different features of the truck. Because it’s been so incredibly hot, pet mode has become a wonderful luxury the past few days. I don’t have any pets, of course, but pet mode keeps the truck at a lovely 72° when I’m away, keeping the truck interior and the insulin inside of it happy and preventing a furnace from developing inside!

These are the days I wish I was a founding member of the Sierra Nevada Rivian Club. However, I know that I am just down the hill from adventuring with them when adventure calls.
