Backroads Boggie in the Bay

A good friend of mine was in town and was looking to do a little riding around the bay as he’s often here on business and has never been riding out here. I didn’t know much in the way of bike rental in this area other than Dubbelju and EagleRider. Rob however found something a bit more local: California Motorcycle Adventures in Mountain View. They had the standard fleet of Harleys with some representation from BMW and Honda.

I don’t often get to ride my backyard as I tend to ride out of the area. But, this seemed like the perfect weekend to see what’s around at home. Kings Mountain is a staple of the Doc Wong ride. We started there a bit later in the day (11am) and there were tons of bikes on the road. It didn’t appear that there was a big event going on so I’m guessing the later start gives the others a head start. Once we crossed over Skyline, Tunitas Creek was a big surprise. I remember that road being pot holed out and bumpy. Seems like the county has paved it. It’s still narrow, but the pavement quality is orders of magnitude better.

Mid fall is usually a good time to ride the coast as it tends to be less foggy and the rains haven’t quite become fully entrenched.

From the coast we headed back into the hills to go see Alice. Pescadero and CA-84.  Both were very clean roads except for one spot of road construction.  After lunch we headed to Pigeon Point Lighthouse through Big Basin and out to Bonny Doon.  Once arriving at the lighhouse I was able to strike up a conversation with one of the docents at the store.  The lighthouse will be undergoing a restoration over the next five years which will remove the lens from the lighthouse.  Thus there will not be a night lighting of the lighthouse during that time. Major 🙁 :(.

The museum had quite a bit of interesting info in it, in particular this replica of the light house with a cross section of the internals of it.  i was  not able to get a photo of it as the light was in the wrong spot.  Doh!

We headed back to  the bay via 84 as 92 would have been packed from all the pumpkin festival traffic.  We made it just in time for the 5pm rental drop off!  All in all a fun day.
